Musti looked after all of us the whole way and never once made it feel like a job. Three days from Marrakech to the dunes is a lot of road, and he broke it up so well that none of us minded. I would do it again with the same guide.

Our guide Musti was funny and knew the route properly. The camel ride out to the camp was the part we came for, and one piece of advice: wear padded cycling shorts, because an hour and a half on a saddle is harder on you than it looks.

Good value for what you get, and the desert night was worth the whole thing. Be honest with yourself about the driving though: days one and two are manageable and day three is a long haul back. Our van was full, which did not help.

Worth knowing before you book: you do not reach the Sahara until about seven on the evening of day two and you leave again at six the next morning. That is the trade for a three-day trip. In June the heat also made sleeping difficult.

I paid the upgrade for the luxury tent and there was nothing luxurious about it — the shower was a trickle. The hotel on the first night was worse, with a cold shower and a tired room. The desert itself was fine; the accommodation was not what was sold.

We were packed into a full van with no working air conditioning, which on that road is a long day. The restaurant stops were the operator's choice and the prices were well above what we paid elsewhere. The dunes were lovely; getting there was not.

The camel ride is about forty-five minutes to three-quarters of an hour each way, which is plenty if you are not used to it. The group we were with made the trip. Fes to Marrakech in three days covers an enormous amount of ground.

There is a great deal of driving. The first day from Fes to the camel ride ran nine and a half hours and we arrived around sunset, when it was busy and it was not clear which bag to take out to the camp. Ask about that before you set off.

A genuinely informative trip through southern Morocco and Ali was patient with everyone in the group. My advice is to pay the extra for the deluxe tent, because a hot shower at the end of that day is worth more than it costs.

There were nine of us crossing the dunes by camel to the camp, where they had tea waiting. Dinner was traditional and there was a fire and drums afterwards. We came back by four-wheel drive early the next morning.

Everything was in the price except the souvenirs you could choose to buy from the camel handler, which is rarer than it should be. Mustapha and the team were good company. The heated tent made the night comfortable.

We crossed the High Atlas in heavy snow, which was extraordinary, and the ploughs kept the road clear. Ait Ben Haddou was excellent and the camel ride and desert night were the high point. Ali and Anas looked after the group well.

About fifteen hours of driving in a small van with sixteen people is the honest summary. The camel trekking in the Sahara is the main event and it is roughly two hours. The four in the morning start was not in the itinerary I booked.

I am glad we took four days with two nights in the desert. The groups doing one night had barely any time in the dunes before they had to leave again. We had a full extra day out there, with quad riding and time to do nothing.

We did this in the first week of July and were nervous about the heat. It was not as bad as we feared, but you do need the right clothes and a scarf to be comfortable. Plan around the middle of the day.

Worth doing despite a few small annoyances. If you want your own room rather than sharing with strangers, book the luxury option — that is the difference between the tiers. A night in a tent in the Sahara is the thing you will remember.
